Beyond the obvious ones of needing people with certain skills, knowledge, and talents, seven important characteristics of great teams come to mind:
- A common goal (vision)
- Shared commitment to the goal
- Open communication
- Trust
- Understanding each other
- Chemistry
- And finally, grace
As we’ve seen, the leader of an organization needs to do well in three big areas:
- Be a person worth following.
- Create clarity around what your organization is about (your mission, vision and values).
- Build a great team to work on the mission with you.
We’ve already explored two important ways to build a great team: 1) hire well—not just for skills and experience, but also for character, and 2) develop the individuals on your team.
Now I want to look at a third vital piece of the puzzle of how to build a great team: how to bring your team together as a united group—a cohesive team. Unity is important for a sports team, for a business team, and especially for a team that is representing the body of Christ.
